Have you ever wondered if the cure was more painful than the pain? Have you ever considered throwing your laptop out the window?
We have become so dependent on computers to communicate and conduct our daily activities. We take our laptop on trips and treat it as if it were an appendage of our body. But wait! It got worse. We carry our i-phone or Blackberry attached to our purse or our belt. Each meeting begins with the announcement. Disable all electronic noise generators as a courtesy to the speaker. It is expected that the majority of the public will automatically get carried away with electronic equipment.
I even see people coming into the church and the gym with their cell phones hanging on their waist. I understand “reaching out and touching someone” but an hour? We became desperately addicted. The next thing you know, we’ll see bands come together in secret and call themselves CA – addicted to communication or computer science.
Before becoming paranoid or upset, let me confess; I am guilty too. This spreads to epidemic proportions. My lovely 4 year old grandson already has a serious case of computer addiction. Kaden can not wait to put his sticky fingers on my Blackberry and my laptop. Do not get me wrong, he actually knows exactly what to do with it. Of course, he first looks for games, but this little genius can also find and play them. We have created a generation of addicts. What is this world coming from?
Why is this topic taking center stage today? A little over a week ago, I talked about my computer suffering from the terminal “blue screen of death”. The patient remained in the emergency department and returned home with the new Windows 7 operating system. Good news and bad news. Good news that the data has been recovered and reinstalled. Bad news that Windows XP is dead on the operating table. Windows 7 was transplanted and the patient lived. Major surgery and a complete internal enema were added to the recovery period. Windows 7 is the newest “latest and best” operating system from Microsoft. Sounds exciting, does not it? Yes and no. Officially, Windows 7 will not be released until October 23rd.
Such an early stage for an operating system stems logically from the fact that many programs and technicians are less familiar with all the complexities and adaptations. So far, I have five and a half hours to discover with Palm Pilot, while my Tungsten C refuses to play pleasantly with Windows 7; I have a PDA with zero hot sync capability. Cyberspace helps me if the PDA is lost or if its battery is discharged.
We spent four hours today with my check scanner reaching the computer and touching my fingers, but not completing the electronic handshake. Thanks to the formidable patient technicians at Treasury Gateway, we finally managed to find a temporary “work-a-round” solution.
Installing a new, almost published, operating system on a non-technology laptop requires patience, a pot of strong coffee, and sometimes a bullet to kill thoughts and words that might to provoke a conscious expression.
Progress! Most programs work. Currently, I am able to work. Oh yes, I learn in many ways. I am also grateful for a curious mind and desire to learn.
