Enhance Career Prospects With Computer Courses

There is no denying the importance of information technology in the workplace. Even roles in customer service and areas not traditionally associated with computers, such as hospitality, education, trades and gardening, all use computer technology in the 21st century. While many workers generally master a range of software packages, others are just skating … and may not know they are skating on very thin ice.

It’s really not enough to type with two fingers and struggle with basic packages. Training in these areas is usually offered in the workplace and can be completed in a relaxed manner with minimal effort or wasted time. However, there is little excuse for weak computer skills.

Word processor

The computer courses in word processing teach you the basics of creating a document (for example in Microsoft Word) and editing it so you can save it as “finished”. There are generally three levels of competence: basic, intermediate and standard.

Most recruiting firms and some employers test themselves the skill of a potential employee in this basic skill. Although most do not expect the high-level skills of an administrative assistant (unless of course you are an administrative assistant), they require efficient daily use of the system in place. If this system is in MS Word format, users are generally expected to know how to use page numbering, table of contents, page breaks, and simple formatting functions.

Typing

Learning to type was once pretty infernal, in the face of a room filled with typewriters that were chattering. Nowadays, it’s a much more enjoyable experience and taking the time to learn typing typing will be a huge reward for overall efficiency.

Average typists will fare as long as competence is not an essential function of their role. Two-fingered wonders will struggle to finish their work on time and create an inherent disadvantage for themselves. When computer courses are available, it is not necessary to be burdened with writing skills.

Worksheets

Useful for keeping records and managing information, spreadsheets such as MS Excel are invaluable for many business roles. MS Excel is very useful but can be tricky, with formulas to apply and more advanced functions such as targeted searches and macros. The strong skills of MS Excel reflect the resume of the office worker and will help any independent businessman to manage his own records.

Data base

Databases can be difficult and complex or very simple. There is a wide variety of customer relationship management (CRM) packages on the market and it is usually best to learn each package you face as you advance in your career. Unless databases become a specialty, it’s possible to stick to what you know and hone your skills as needed.

The creative thing

Computer classes are available in design packages such as Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, or Photoshop. Most jobs do not necessarily require these skills, but that does not mean they are not useful for you. An experienced user of design software can create brochures, logos and a range of marketing materials, all beautifully designed and ready to print.

Computer classes generally increase productivity, which is a benefit to the employer and the employee. Long-term employee benefits can include more career alternatives and increased value for an employer; resulting in better job security.
